Volunteer: Seed Collection Workshop with the Georgia Native Plant Society at Wilburn Farm

11/09/2024 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET

Summary

Birds Georgia is working with the Georgia Native Plant Society to host a seed collection workshop at the historic Wilburn Farm in the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area.

Description

Birds Georgia is restoring 20 acres of grassland for birds and wildlife at the Historic Wilburn Farm in the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. In partnership with the Georgia Native Plant Society, we’re hosting a seed collection workshop to gather native seeds that will be used to restore the site after invasive species removal. This is a hands-on opportunity to support local wildlife and improve the habitat for native birds. The first hour will be a standard workday to allow the grasses to dry before collecting their seeds.

During the workshop, you will:

  • Get a brief introduction to the ethics and importance of seed collection for restoration work
  • Learn about seed collecting, storage, and treatment for native plants
  • Discover how to separate the chaff from the seed and what took look for in fertile seed

Take what you learn home: The skills and knowledge you gain from this workshop can be applied to your own yard or property! You’ll leave with practical tips on how to collect and propagate native plants and contribute to habitat restoration by supporting local biodiversity.

No experience is needed, and this is a great opportunity for people of all backgrounds to get involved in meaningful conservation work. Whether you’re passionate about plants, enjoy spending time outdoors, or want to contribute to a long-term project, this event is designed to be both educational and engaging. Our team will be there to guide you every step of the way.

Why Volunteer?

  • Be part of a long-term effort to restore native grasslands for wildlife
  • Learn new skills and gain insight into native plants and ecological restoration
  • Meet like-minded people and work together in a beautiful, natural setting
  • Enjoy a fulfilling day contributing to the environment while getting some light outdoor exercise
  • Apply what you learn to help create or improve wildlife-friendly spaces in your own yard or community

Since we’ll be walking through tall grass, please dress appropriately: long pants, long sleeves, boots, and a hat are recommended. Don’t forget to bring bug spray and your own reusable water bottle.

We’ll provide gloves, hand tools, seed collection bags, and a water cooler to refill your bottles.

You will receive the address after registering for the workshop.

Join us to make a direct impact on habitat restoration while learning and connecting with the local community—and take home valuable knowledge to help improve your own green spaces!
